[hahy-per-tekst]
-noun
a method of storing data through a computer program that allows a user to create and link fields of information at will and to retrieve the data nonsequentially.
Tim Berners-Lee proposed a solution to the problem of hierarchical organization of CERN´s information called Enquire. Enquire was a program using hypertext, which allowed one to store snippets of information, and to link related pieces together in any way. This allowed many people to access the same data. "Hypertext", coined in the 1960´s by Ted Nelson, is human-readable information linked together in an unconstrained way. Hypertext is composed of a system of links and nodes for easy access without the restraints of a hierarchial system. This "web" is what becomes our internet.
