As a designer who has been primarily concerned with still, 2-dimensional printing, I have decided that I would like to explore video as a design medium. During the semester I will make a short film and design all the promotional items (website, poster, trailer, etc.). Pacing, color, motion, and vantage point will be my main concerns as a director. I have had some experience in video editing (in my previous school) and with my added knowledge of design, I would like to see how I can translate these skills on film. Typography, layout, pacing, and color are all elements that I have enhanced while studying at Montserrat. I consider myself a pretty versatile designer, yet I have not really explored the film medium. Next semester will allow me not only to have fun with film, but perhaps to discover a whole new mode of expression. I hope to graduate from Montserrat as a designer who can work in any medium. By making a film, I will have filled a void that I feel is in my portfolio. Music will also be an added dimension to my films. As someone who is very sensitive to their music, I will choose carefully what accompanies my film. Film and video are the epitome of contemporary visual arts. It permeates the visual, auditory, and emotional state of its audience. My hope will be to not only accomplish the previous, but to perhaps change their notions of the medium by utilizing alternative techniques in my film. I will spend the summer researching techniques with film and have a clear idea of what I will be making next Fall. Liya Hoshi, 11 may 05 |
