Joseph LoVasco : skateboards
current —
I want to work with line drawings, both on flat surfaces and as three-dimensional objects in three-dimensional spaces. I will create these line drawings by hand and by other means, including digital and handtools (i.e., computer, band saw).
I am interested in the line (contour, curve, etc.,); its materiality (ink, wood, etc.,); and the space it's in.
My work will take various forms, including laser output, stencils, freestanding and wall-hung plywood cutouts.
I am also thinking of the body as a drawing tool, e.g., light-emitting diodes attached to a skateboarder, so that abstractions of her motions might be captured by long-exposure photography.
I will be exploring the work of artists like Frank Stella, Kara Walker, Elsworth Kelly, Jackson Pollock.
I have expanded my theme beyond skateboard decks, which were the focus in my earlier proposal. This project allows me to combine my dual interest in sculpture and design, in ways that I will be pursuing over the next year or more.

For my seminar project I would like to combine my sculptural interests in to seminar project. The reason for this is because I'm concentrating in both areas and feel that it would be best to combine the two rather than separate them.
I will be using skateboards as sculptural material in hopes of removing their purpose as a means of transportation. To do this I will be cutting, carving, dismantling, etc. During the process of making the pieces I will document them and display my results in book, poster, etc., forms.

For my seminar project I would like to do a series of skateboards. In which I will find different ways to apply an image/graphics to the decks. Some ideas for applying the image would be to silkscreen, vinyl stencils, carve, cut through, paint, glue, etc.
Also the decks may not have to be the normal wood boards. Some possibilities for board materials would be clay, plaster, glass, paper, etc. 10 may 06
