Edward McKnight Kauffer Born 1890 in the United States and studied painting before moving to London, England, where he was active in the 1920s and 30s. In London he tried to create himself a painting career. He entered his paintings in a contest where an executive at the London Underground took a liking to his cubist style of painting and asked him to design a series of posters illustrating the scenic views and lush countryside of the towns to which the Underground gave access. He moved to New York City at the end of the 1930's before the war, and worked for Shell and other major firms until his death in 1954. These collages incorporate motifs from Kauffer's own designs.
