Social Responsibility and Graphic Design
project duration : one semester

To say that the world in which we live is a pleasant one is a practice of sheer naivety. There are many problems plaguing the world today: social, economic, political, religious, etc. Enjoying the wealth and privilege afforded to one fortunate enough to be born in the First World, I believe that it is an individual's responsibility to be conscious of one's position and use it help bring about beneficial change both internally and abroad. As a graphic designer, one gains access to channels of communication and the organizations, institutions, leaders and media that have great influence over social values and priorities. One of the designer's responsibilities is to choose how these channels are accessed, and how the channel's information is conveyed to the intended audience. It is here, where individual meets information that the conflict between person and professional occur.

For my seminar proposal, I intend to investigate the relationships and conflicts experienced between the socially conscious individual and the professional graphic designer, with the intent of producing work commenting on various aspects of this exploration. In addition, I plan on, when appropriate, commenting on issues and current events pertinent to my seminar exploration. Independent of seminar, yet operating in tandem, I also intend to start up a Montserrat chapter of Amnesty International. Here, it is my hope to find like-minded students willing to help educate and inform the greater Montserrat community.
