Paper Dolls, Artist Stereotypes
project duration : one semester

Throughout the semester I will gather information on how people view artist, by their appearance. I plan to conduct a series of interviews about how a person depicts an artist. I will interview different types of age groups, artist and non-artist. I will also share my own personal experience on how and artist should or should not look. I also plan to research the history of paper dolls, and how paper dolls are made. I will collect my information using different sources such as books, the internet, public places, telephone etc.

My goal is to collect this information and produce a book that contains the interviews and the history of paper dolls. This book will also show my sketches of how each individual person describes what they think an artist should look like. I will also make a series of small paper doll books using the information that I gather, so the viewer will have a hands on perspective of what different stereotypes of artist are. I plan to create a short animation that combines the information that I have gathered.

I propose to develop an in-depth research of how an artist should look. In today's society, people are labeled with different stereotypes, either by the way they look, what they wear, and even what kind of job they have. All too often a person is depicted by a memory, that one person has, or by their own personal judgment. Society has created its own set of ideas about how artist should look. One might say that because someone is an artist they should have blue hair, baggy pants, and paint all over their clothing. Another might say, artist are full of tattoos, piercing, and smells like chemicals. Although people have stereotypes about artist, a lot of what they think and say is not necessarily true.
