Blood & Treasure
For my senior design seminar I intend to develop all aspects of a clothing company. I would classify it as being primarily a tee-shirt company, however my product is not limited to that. I am interested in developing promotional products and materials as well for the company. (i.e.,: stickers, catalog, website, advertisements, etc.). The name of the company is "Blood and Treasure," I developed this name after listening to the 2004 presidential debates, I feel that this is a good name for the kind of company I want to have and my targeted demographic, which is basically people just like myself, who are into the surf and skate culture but also sort of relate to the arts and the design realm. Some companies that I feel have influenced me over the years and continue to push my interest in a project such as this are Volcom, Billabong, and Vans. These are my top three choices and influences in the surf and skate realm, but I have also recently been very interested in such companies as "The Quiet Life" and "Obey Giant" both of these companies were started by designers as a creative outlet for their work. I see the tee-shirt as another and perhaps newer medium to get the message across. I see the tee-shirt as a sort of poster you can wear. I do not however want to be simply labeled as a surf and skate company. I feel that because only within the past two years -- around this area at least -- has this lifestyle been accepted as a valid one. Before then I think there was an almost taboo feel to the sport and the lifestyle. People associated it with the lazy burnout kids, and people like Jeff Spicoli from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." But I think that now it has really started to come around, there are nearly twenty times as many people surfing on average in Cape Ann alone not to mention the rest of the Northeast. And they are not just kids, the majority of the newcomers are anywhere in the 30-40 year old range. And I see them out in public wearing surf companies' products proudly. So, I just feel that this is always something that I wanted to do, I love design and I love surfing and to be able to combine those two worlds into something that could be an ongoing and perhaps lucrative project would be everything in the world to me. So I guess that is it for now. It's just time to start designing. date : 31 December 05
