Two poems

by Alexandra Karnoff

Letters to Baghdad

Tan and grit
The sediment littering
Veins of bereft highway
Erect
Golden breasts
Cap your mosques
Glinting in
The unyielding sun
Do your dominos
Still clatter atop counters
In cloudy cafes
Camo clad men
Sleep in your palaces
Your women
Swaddled in miles of black
Smoke
Still rises
The Tigris
Still flows

untitled

Catcalls coincide
With falling shingles
The sleet
Makes the streets
Sleek
It was cold
I was timid
